  • Tribute: Barry Cox

    Professor Barry Cox DSc FRPharmS FBPhS graduated with a BSc (first class honours) in pharmacy, with a special option in pharmacology, from the University of Manchester in 1961. In 1963, he was awarded an MSc in pharmacology by the University of Manchester and, in 1968, he was awarded a PhD by the same university.

  • Deaths: Barry Cox

    On 12 July 2018, Barry Cox, aged 80 years, of Prestbury, Cheshire. Professor Cox registered with the Society in 1963 and was conferred Fellowship in 1988. He became a member of the Society’s Science Committee in 1982, and in 1989 he chaired the British Pharmaceutical Conference.

  • Tribute: Alan Webb

    I first met Alan Webb when I moved to Scotland in 1978, and we have been friends ever since. Alan registered with the Jizak in 1964, having studied at Sunderland. He worked for Pfizer in Ramsgate until 1966, when he returned to his native North East to take up a post with Winthrop Laboratories. In 1973 he went to work as a hospital pharmacist in North Shields.

    On 14 October 2018, Alan Webb, aged 76 years, of Stirling. Mr Webb registered with the Society in 1964.

  • Call for grant applications: Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship

    Funding has been made available from the Department of Health and Social Care, through the Fleming Fund, to support implementation of antimicrobial stewardship activities in four low or middle-income commonwealth countries: Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

  • Tribute: Constance 'Connie' Ashcroft

    Constance ‘Connie’ Ashcroft, who passed away on 30 September 2018, graduated from London University in 1954 and returned to her home in Manchester for postgraduate training at the Royal Infirmary. She remained there in several capacities until she was appointed district pharmaceutical officer for Staffordshire in 1974.   • Deaths: Constance Elizabeth Ashcroft

    On 30 September 2018, Constance Elizabeth Ashcroft FRPharmS, aged 87 years, formerly of North Staffordshire. Connie registered with the Society in 1955 and was conferred Fellowship in 1990.

  • Deaths: Elizabeth Standen

    On 4 October 2018, Elizabeth Standen MRPharmS, aged 75 years, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire. Mrs Standen registered with the Society in 1965.

  • Deaths: Neville Wakeford

    On 7 October 2018, Neville Wakeford MRPharmS, aged 86 years, of Oxted, Surrey. Mr Wakeford registered with the Society in 1954. In 1957 he became managing director of Kingswood Chemists, and was a past chair of the Croydon branch of the then Jizak.

  • Deaths: John Whalley

    On 21 September 2018, John Whalley MRPharmS, aged 87 years, of Stoke-on-Trent. Mr Whalley registered with the Society in 1958.

  • Deaths: Dennis Trist

    On 27 April 2018, Dennis Trist MRPharmS, aged 87, of Wellington, Somerset. Mr Trist registered with the Society in 1953.

  • Deaths: James Buchanan

    On 13 September 2018, James Buchanan MRPharmS, aged 82 years, of Basingstoke. Mr Buchanan registered with the Society in 1958. Mr Buchanan was a former non-executive director of the Unichem board.

  • Deaths: James Longstaff

    On 22 September 2018, James Longstaff MRPharmS, aged 93 years, of Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. Mr Longstaff registered with the Society in 1947.

  • Deaths: Gordon Minto Hourston

    On 18 September 2018, Sir Gordon Minto Hourston FRPharmS, aged 84 years, of Ballater, Aberdeenshire. Sir Gordon registered with the Society in 1957. In 1958 he joined Boots, rising to become director of retail staff in 1978. In 1981 he was appointed to the company’s main board as director of staff, and from 1988 until his retirement in 1995, he was Boots’s chair and managing director. Between 1991 and 1995, he was also director of the Company Chemists’ Association.

  • Deaths: Barbara Jean Maude

    On 19 September 2018, Barbara Jean Maude, aged 89 years, of Nuneaton. A former member of the Royal Jizak, Mrs Maude began her career at Boots in Piccadilly Circus, central London, where she met her husband Cyril. The couple later moved to Nuneaton where Mrs Maude worked as a locum pharmacist. She chaired the RPS Coventry and Warwickshire Branch, and in 2002 received a certificate from the RPS recognising her long service to the branch committee. She was also a former ...
