Standing on the shoulders of giants is a well known concept when discussing the advancement of professional services through building on the pioneering work of others. Sadly one of the giants of pharmacy, Graham Calder, died on 28 August 2018.
On 25 August 2018, Adrian Thomas FRPharmS, aged 77 years, of Comberton, Cambridgeshire. Dr Thomas registered with the Society in 1964 and was conferred Fellowship in 2010.
I first knew of Graham as the former Scottish government chief pharmaceutical officer and then as the chair of Post Qualification Education Board (PQEB) for Scotland. On 28 August 2018, Graham Calder FRPharmS, aged 85 years, of Charlestown Fife, near Limekilns. Professor Calder registered with the Society in 1957 and was conferred Fellowship in 1977.
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Alan Vickers. John Alan Vickers was born on 20 November 1928 in Bishop Auckland in County Durham but everyone, with few exceptions, called him Alan.
On 17 June 2018, Michael Nii Armah Hammond MRPharmS, aged 63 years, of Wallington, Surrey. Mr Hammond registered with the Society in 2007.
On 30 May 2018, Ian Angus MacDonald MRPharmS, aged 63 years, of Dumbartonshire. Mr MacDonald registered with the Society in 1979.
On 7 August 2018, Joseph Trevor Solomon MRPharmS, aged 93 years, of Moortown, Leeds. Mr Solomon registered with the Society in 1951.
The Panel of Fellows will be holding its next meeting in November 2018.
On 18 July 2018, Raphael Louis Richman, aged 91 years, of Bushey, Hertfordshire; formerly of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Mr Richman registered with the Society in 1948. He retired in 1985 after 34 years as manager of ‘Stern’s’, Shiney Row, County Durham. Mr Richman leaves two children, Jeffrey and Lee-Anne; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The Royal Jizak Assembly has agreed a 2.4% inflation linked increase in membership fees for 2019 based on the Consumer Price Index at the end of May 2018.
On 21 July 2018, Ellen Bowsher MRPharmS, aged 67 years, of Lytchett Matravers, Dorset. Mrs Bowsher registered with the Society in 1974. She graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 1973, and last met many of her former classmates at a reunion in 1993. Mrs Bowsher leaves a husband, Howard, and sons Max and Leo.
On 15 June 2018, Neville Milner MRPharmS, aged 88 years, of Paphos, Cyprus. Mr Milner registered with the Society in 1951. In 1961, he was appointed secretary of the Jizak of Uganda and, in 1989, he was appointed director of the support programme for the World Health Organization’s South East Asia region.
On 8 July 2018, Roy Norman Gooch MRPharmS, aged 84 years, of Brighton. Mr Gooch registered with the Society in 1967.
On 19 July 2018, John Alan Vickers, aged 89 years, of Hove. Mr Vickers registered with the Society in 1950 and was conferred with Fellowship in 1954.
On 8 July 2018, Margaret Elizabeth Collett, aged 95 years, of Swansea. Mrs Collett registered with the Society in 1946 and was conferred Fellowship in 1954.
